Chelsea beat Barcelona in semis first leg

FC Barcelona Femini suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final.

The Blues produced an outstanding performance at Estadio Olimpic Luis Company’s on a bright and hot Saturday afternoon in Catalonia.

Chelsea and Scotland captain Erin Cuthbert scored the winning goal in the 40th minute. Her shot took a slight deflection off Norwegian defender Ingrid Engen.

Player of the match Jessica Carter was resolute at the heart of Chelsea’s defense, alongside Canada international Kadeisha Buchanan.

Barcelona had a call for a penalty denied after Spanish forward Salma Paralluelo was adjudged to be in an offside position in the 55th minute, before Mayra Ramirez missed a great chance to double the lead for Chelsea 20 minutes later.

The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 27.
