U-17 WAFU Championship: Black Starlets beat Ivory Coast 3-2 to finish 3rd place

On Friday afternoon, the Ghana U17 team staged a comeback to defeat the Ivory Coast 3-2 and take third place with a bronze medal at the 2022 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship.

Yan Diomande of Ivory Coast gave them an early advantage in the fifth minute after Ivory Coast was given a penalty.

Abdul Rashid also scored from the penalty spot for the Black Starlets in the ninth minute after the Ivorian goalie went in for a tackle.

Both teams failed to score after being given penalties in the first half, which ended 1-1.

The Black Starlets took the lead right after the break thanks to a perfectly placed shot from Richard Apokum in the 58th minute.

Before the Ivorians burst into Ghana’s box from the flanks and sent in a cross for Aboubacar Sidick to equalize in the 78th minute, the Black Starlets maintained their lead for a while.

After a ball was curled into the Ivorian box in the 93rd minute, Razak Salifu scored the game-winning goal for the Black Starlets to make the score 3-2.

Due to their failure to go through the semifinals of the 2022 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship, Ghana’s u-17 team will not be competing at the u-17 AFCON and u-17 World Cup.
