SPANISH SUPER CUP: Real Madrid blow Atletico away

In a thrilling Spanish Super Cup semifinal match played in Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in extra time.

Before Ferland Mendy headed in Dani Carvajal’s cross to put Real up, Mario Hermoso of Atletico and Antonio Rudiger of Real both scored headers.

Carvajal forced extra time after Rudiger scored an own goal and Antoine Griezmann scored a club record-breaking 174th goal for Atletico.

Brahim Diaz’s goal and a late own goal by Stefan Savic gave Real Madrid the victory.

After Diaz beat Atletico keeper Jan Oblak in a race that began in his own half and ended with a 40-yard shot into an empty net, the goal was scored in injury time.

In Sunday’s final, Real Madrid will take on either Barcelona or Osasuna, who square off in Thursday’s other semifinal.
