Neymar, a striker for Brazil and Al-Hilal, will have surgery after rupturing his meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while serving his country.
The 31-year-old was carried away from Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay on a stretcher while in tears.
In the opening period of the World Cup qualifier for 2026, the Brazilian star landed awkwardly after a challenge.
“It’s a very sad time, the worst,” Neymar wrote on Instagram.
“I know I’m strong, but this time I’m going to need my family and friends even more.”
The length of Neymar’s absence is unknown, although the rehabilitation time from an ACL tear or rupture is typically eight to ten months.
