Super Falcons looking distraught after losing 1-0 to Brazil

Germany will face the United States of America in a game that promises to be a cracker in the second round of matches, following an outstanding 3-0 victory over Australia courtesy of Marina Hegering, Lea Schuller, and Jule Brand goals.

France survived the Colombia scare to hold on to a 3-2 victory as Chelsea striker Mayra Ramirez was sent off.

Catalina Usme and a goal from Manuela Pavi Sepulveda gave Colombia hope after a brace from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and one from Kanza Dali had shot the French into a 3-0 lead.

World champions Spain handed a close 2-1 defeat to Japan.

Japan went into the game in good form after thrashing the Black Queens of Ghana 4-0 in a friendly encounter.

Aoba Fujino gave Nadeshiko Japan the lead before Barcelona winger Aitana Bonmati equalized, and Mariona Caldentey scored the winner for Spain.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 1-0 to the Samba Queens of Brazil, led by the evergreen Marta.

Gabi Nunes scored the only goal of the game to give the Brazilians a winning start to the women’s football event at the Paris Olympics.

Canada came from a goal down to defeat New Zealand 2-1 despite the sacking of their coach, Bev Priestman, over the spy-drone scandal.
