MAX NEWS: Tema ECG embarks on exercise to replace old meters

To supply consumers with modern prepaid meters that operate remotely without the need for an intermediary, the Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana has initiated a mass meter replacement operation.

Any prepaid meters that employ cards—where credit has to be loaded onto the cards and then swiped in the meter—will be replaced by this project. Since they do not need any such cards, the new meters—known as smart prepaid meters—function by having credit put onto them immediately upon purchase.

The Tema Regional PRO for the Power Distributor, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, indicated that “the project will cover customers using older versions of prepaid meters within the Tema Metropolis, Prampram, Afienya, Nungua, and Ashaiman areas.” She also added that these replacements do not cost the customer, even if they include possible re-routing.

Mr. Nii Kwei Codjoe, who is the Marketing Officer for ECG Tema Region, encouraged customers to be alert and not succumb to any possible fraud issues, as “unscrupulous people often call unsuspecting customers whenever such projects are being worked on, in an attempt to cause fraud.”

He stated that ECG does not accept payments in the field, adding that the organization has gone cashless and that all transactions must be made digitally to the organization and not physically.

It will be recalled that ECG customers once used postpaid meters before switching to prepaid ones.

When asked why it was necessary to switch from prepaid meters to a different kind of prepaid meter, the ECG Team replied that since technology is developing and evolving, the company is positioning itself to adapt. They also added that the deployment of smart prepaid meters will make it more convenient for customers because lost cards and the need to replace them will become obsolete.

The ECG Team further appealed to the public to be receptive to its field workers, to ask them questions when they were unsure, and to insist on seeing ID cards as needed.
