MAX LIFESTYLE: Accra will flood with more than 50 milliliters of rain – GMeT

By Michael Mensah Martey

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has warned that the country’s capital, Accra, will suffer flooding whenever it rains beyond 50 millimeters.

The warning follows the heavy rains of last Friday, which submerged portions of Accra in large swamps of running water.

After almost an hour of rain, numerous locations, including the Tema Motorway, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, North Kaneshie, Alajo, Adabraka, Accra Central, Tema, Tema station-Accra, Osu, and others, were severely impacted.

Many homes and cars were flooded by the water, and it also caused drains carrying flowing water to overflow. Some potholes on the roads were also widened and deepened

The Head of Forecasting at the GMeT, Joseph Portuphy, said in an interview that the rain was gauged at 78 millimetres, which is why that level of flooding was witnessed across the city.

He declared that every time it rains more than 50 millimetres, Accra would experience these flooding problems.

“If we have a rain above 50 millimetres within two to three hours Accra will be flooded and that was what happened,” he stated.
