Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been handpicked by Parliament to vie for the inaugural Democracy Cup, an initiative devised to honor the 30th anniversary of the legislative body.
Scheduled for Friday, July 5, 2024, this monumental clash will not only witness a battle on the pitch between these renowned football clubs but will also feature Members of Parliament squaring off against former Black Stars players in a captivating curtain-raiser at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The announcement of this prestigious event was made by Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the esteemed Speaker of Parliament, during a session in Parliament.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin revealed an enticing incentive for the victor of the Hearts vs. Kotoko encounter: the opportunity to challenge United States-based club, DC United, on their home turf in Washington.
This initiative comes on the heels of Parliament’s recent celebration of its 30th anniversary since its establishment in 1993. This milestone holds profound significance, marking the enactment of the 1992 Constitution and the nation’s return to democratic governance.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin expressed gratitude for the support received from various partners and stakeholders, attributing the genesis of the Democracy Cup to their collaborative efforts.
He underscored the Cup’s role in amplifying the commemoration of both the 30th anniversary of the 1992 constitution and the Parliament of the Fourth Republic, affirming its significance in celebrating the achievements of the legislative body.
In addition to the much-anticipated football spectacle, other activities have been planned to mark this auspicious anniversary, including parliamentary sessions, debates, peace walks, and recreational events, fostering a sense of unity and celebration among citizens.
