Afrobeat singer Camidoh has received heavy backlash for urging people to smoke, irrespective of the health risks it imposes on smokers.
The musician recently expressed his disapproval of the claims that smoking was harmful to the body and its systems.
According to him, the conversation about smoking should have a second look, as many foods pass through smoke before they are consumed.
While general advice discouraged smoking due to its adverse effects on the lungs, the “Sugarcane” hitmaker noted that other activities, like cooking kenkey and smoking fish, involved exposure to smoke; hence, the perception of smoking’s harm could vary and should be assessed well.
“Not everything that is portrayed as negative is negative. Generally, they say we shouldn’t smoke because it’s bad for our lungs. How about our parents, who have been cooking kenkey? You see them when they are making kenkey; you see how smoky it gets? I just want to tell you that you don’t have to dwell on that. It is not bad in my eyes,” he said.
Meanwhile, some health practitioners have dismissed his views, emphasizing that smoking was indeed detrimental to health as it caused lung cancer, eye problems, and optic nerve damage, thus warning smokers to desist from the act.
