The Atlas Lions of Morocco achieved yet another history as they reached the semifinals of the men’s football event of the Paris Olympics.
Led by captain Achraf Hakimi, they dumped the United States of America out of the competition with a commanding 4-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the Parc des Princes.
Soufiane Rahimi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 29th minute to give the Moroccans a first-half lead over the Americans.
Hakimi extended his side’s lead in the 70th minute, seven minutes after Ilias Akhomach had doubled the score.
Another converted penalty goal for the Lions through Mehdi Maouhoub put the game beyond the Americans as Morocco advanced to the semifinals.
