PURC debunks ECG's overloaded transformers claims

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) refuted the Electricity Company of Ghana’s assertion that the power disruptions were caused by overloaded transformers.

The ECG made these claims after the PURC had demanded data on the transformers to validate their public statements.

In a report, the PURC stated that an examination of the data provided by the ECG revealed that, of the 715 transformers, 31 had loads below 70%, 595 had loads between 70% and 100%, and 89 had loads exceeding 100%.

The data was subsequently compared, according to the report, to the power distributor’s total outage data for the period of January to March 18, 2024.

“The analyses showed that the majority of the outages between 7 pm to 11 pm were as a result of load management operations by Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and faults unrelated to overloaded transformers,” the report said.

Accordingly, the commission determined that ECG’s claim that transformer overload was the cause of the outages that occurred between 7 and 11 p.m. was not factually correct.
