Musician Gasmilla says artistes do not become innovative and creative when they are identified by the genres they sing in.
According to him, there is a need for musicians to broaden their scope for artistic growth.
Speaking in an interview, the “3 Points” hitmaker said the practice of categorizing artistes into specific music genres or styles was hampering their ability to evolve and innovate.
That, he noted, limited their potential for artistic growth and urged industry players and music enthusiasts to desist from the act.
“I don’t think people should box artistes into one style of music. That singular act kills creativity. I, for instance, may have the skills to explore other areas and put my artistic prowess to the test.”
“Putting me in one style of music will kill my creativity. In fact, this act of saying this artiste belongs to this space or that space alone kills creativity, and we must put a stop to it,” Gasmilla said.
He observed that there were musicians who perfectly fit into different genres or styles, but due to the manner in which they were identified with a particular genre, they were not compelled to broaden their tentacles to embrace other genres.
“Let us not harbor the mentality that a musician has to chart just one path. What if exploring other genres is what will work for them?” he queried.
According to the “Telemo” hitmaker, creativity thrives on versatility, and artistes should be encouraged to break free from the confines of a single genre. He also emphasized the need for a more open and inclusive approach to music that allows artistes to explore their full creative potential across a spectrum of styles and genres.
