By Michael Mensah Martey

The largest commercial bank in Ghana, Ecobank Ghana, has replaced Mr. Dan Sackey with Ms. Joana Mensah as acting managing director and is expected to remain as such until a substantive person is named.

Ms. Joana, before her new appointment, was the Chief Risk Officer of the bank. She was responsible for managing the enterprise-wide risk functions across the bank since May 2019, as she supervised operational risk, credit risk, and market risk while also ensuring environmental, social, and governance worked accordingly.

Her adventure with the bank could be dated as far back as August 1993, when she started as a financial analyst before becoming a relationship manager in charge of the SME portfolio and rising to the position of Head of Commercial Banking in 1999.

Ms. Joana became the company’s Country Risk Manager in 2005 while being the Regional Risk Manager for the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ), now the Anglophone West Africa (AWA) region, before being appointed as Senior Credit Officer by the parent company of Ecobank Ghana, Ecobank Transnational Inc.

The new acting Managing Director holds an MBA in Finance and a BSc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Ecobank Gambia.
