In Sam Kerr’s injury-forced absence, Steph Catley stepped up as captain to lead the Matildas to a 1-0 victory over Ireland in their Women’s World Cup debut.
After Hayley Raso was fouled in the 52nd minute, vice-captain Catley, who was wearing the armband, stepped up to take the penalty and calmly converted the winning kick into the top corner, electrifying Stadium Australia.
An opening day to remember for the 2023 #FIFAWWC co-hosts.
Australia, like New Zealand win their opening match as they defeat Republic of Ireland 1-0.
