Hatayspor had to withdraw from the Turkish Super Lig in the 2022/23 season due to the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey. The earthquake resulted in the loss of many lives, including Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, who was a member of the Black Stars national team.
After taking the necessary time to mourn and organize themselves, Hatayspor recently made a return to action by participating in a friendly match against English lower-tier side Hull City on Sunday, July 9. Before the game, the Hatayspor squad gathered for a team photo, with an official of the club holding up the jersey of the late Christian Atsu as a way to remember and pay tribute to him.
The friendly match ended in a 1-1 draw. Hull City took the lead in the 67th minute through Will Jarvis, but Hatayspor managed to equalize in the 83rd minute thanks to Unal Durmushan’s goal.
When the new football season begins, Hatayspor is expected to pay tribute not only to Christian Atsu but also to other players and club officials who lost their lives in the earthquake. It is a gesture that honors their memory and shows solidarity within the team and the wider football community.
